Jonathan Tiu.
ROSARIO, Batangas, Philippines – Defending champion Jonathan Tiu of JCT-Blanche Racing uncorked another blazing performance as he bagged his second straight triumph in the second leg of the 2009 San Mig Coffee National Drag Racing Championship-National Trophy Series recently at the Batangas Racing Circuit Drag Strip.

It wasn’t a record-breaking run as the BRC Drag Strip was notoriously a lot tougher than the Clark International Speedway. But Tiu, a Golden Wheel and AAP awardee, pulled off the fastest time of 9.987 seconds to capture the premier Quick 8 crown.

He turned back fast-rising Ed Christopher Go of Blanche Racing, son of former drag racing champ and current San Mariano Isabela Mayor Edgar Go, who clocked 10.762 seconds for the runner-up finish while older brother Ed Christian Go also of Blanche Racing was third in 11.752 seconds.

Had he set up his reliable Mitsubishi Evo 5 better, Tiu could have broken the existing BRC record of 9.903 seconds.

“It’s really tough to make the right adjustment to maximize the power of the machine here in Batangas, but still I’m happy with the win,” said Tiu.

Ed Christian Go grabbed the limelight when he upstaged Tiu to capture the PRO crown.

Go prevailed in the final showdown with a time of 11.053 seconds, winning via a breakout against Tiu whose car was still in perfect condition clocking 9.785 seconds but was way over his submitted dial slip.

Ed Christopher Go wound up third in 10.920 seconds after being beaten by Tiu in the semifinals.

Winning the other classes were Jonathan Young, Akim Cleofe and Jeanette Go.

Young, also from JCT-Blanche Racing, ruled the Expert class in 12.8 seconds, turning back Junmar Tabalino (12.934) and Chris Palma (13.404).

The event is sanctioned by the Automobile Association Philippines and sponsored by Pagcor, San Miguel Corp., Pilipinas Shell, San Mig Coffee, Yokohama and Aeromed.
